Egypt: Risk November 2018
A recent raft of positive economic news and praise by the IMF are further signs the economy is showing signs of responding to the bailout medicine.
Economic risk (MEDIUM): Stronger growth, a budget surplus, falling unemployment, and fresh investment have raised hopes it will create the jobs needed for the country’s rapidly expanding workforce.
Political risk (HIGH): The death sentence passed on 75 people who took part in violence that erupted after President Mohammed Morsi’s removal in 2013 is a further sign of authoritarianism. The state of emer- gency has been extended for three months.
Financial risk (MEDIUM): The banking system has proved robust during the turmoil of the last few years, but some observers are concerned by the level of external debt.
Commercial risk (MEDIUM): The IMF has praised the government for broadening the structural reform agenda under their programme, initiating reforms to improve the e ciency of land allocation.
