As Africa’s largest natural gas producer and third largest oil producer, Algeria remains an overwhelmingly hydrocarbon-based economy. Energy current accounts for 30% of GDP, 60% of budget revenues, and 95% of export earnings. In 2013, oil and gas export revenues amounted to just under US$ 63.8 bn. Algeria’s state-owned oil and natural gas company, Sonatrach, is the key player in the hydrocarbons industry, currently controlling around 80% of all Algerian hydrocarbons production. By law, Sonatrach has majority ownership of all natural gas and oil projects in Algeria. However, opportunities for foreign involvement in energy production are numerous and lucrative. Sonatrach has concluded dozens of partnerships with major foreign energy corporations like Shell, BG, Exxon, and ENI, and will continue to seek out international partners in the future.
