Bombardier Transportation has been awarded a EUR 3 billion project along with two Egyptian companies, Orascom Construction Plc and Arab Contractors, for the development of a monorail in Cairo.
The project aims at building a 54-kilometre monorail system that links the New Capital city with eastern Cairo, as well as the construction of a second 42-kilometre line connecting the 6th October City with Giza, the British firm said in a statement.
Bombardier Transportation is expected to generate EUR 1.2 billion from the monorail’s design and build contract, the company added.
Moreover, the company said that a 30-year operations and maintenance deal has a potential value of around EUR 1.1 billion.
The monorail trains will be built in Derby, the UK, Bombardier Transportation noted, pointing out that the final contract has not been confirmed yet.
Last Monday, Orascom construction announced it was in talks with the Egyptian government to establish the 6th October City – new capital monorail project, revealing that no agreement has been reached yet.
